Press Release: ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF MISLED COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF MISLED COUNTY COMMISSIONERS: FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND LOCAL FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE STATISTICS REVEAL THE TRUTH ON DEPUTY STAFFING CRISIS AND DATA DISCREPANCIES

The correspondence sent to the Orange County Board of County Commissioners (OCBOCC) outlines a critical shortage of deputy sheriffs in Orange County. Despite an authorized staffing level of 1,885, OCSO operates with only 1,643 sworn officers—242 below the state average of 1.65 deputies per 1,000 residents. Factoring in the actual population, the real shortfall is 645 deputies. This crisis threatens public safety and undermines trust. The letter also raises concerns about the accuracy of staffing data and suggests the OCBOCC should work with the Florida Association of Counties to advocate for using Tourist Development Tax funds to address this staffing gap. It calls for a financial audit to ensure proper use of funds and for county leaders to fulfill their legal and ethical duty to ensure public safety. This issue demands urgent action to support residents, deputies, and the broader community.

The daily news reports of violent crime and resident complaints on social media surely demonstrate this need, for many years now. My campaign platform includes Administrative & Operational Efficiency and reorganization that addresses the root of the problem, staffing shortages and low morale.

After Action Review: Pursuit Policy

Over a year had passed before organized reckless driving and intersection takeovers before the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff and Command Staff permitted deputies to take enforcement action. A review of the actions indicate a violation of policy for pursuits, yet authorized by higher-ups.
